What is a skin undertone, really?
The difference between your skin color and your undertone, and why only one of them matters for shade matching.
People mix up two different things all the time: skin color and undertone. They are not the same, and only one of them helps you pick makeup.
Color changes, undertone doesn’t
Your skin color is the surface. It gets darker in summer, lighter in winter, and shifts with your health and sleep. If you matched your foundation to your skin color alone, you would need a new shade every few months.
Your undertone is the quiet lean underneath, and it stays constant. It is cool (a blue or pink cast), warm (a yellow or golden cast), or neutral (no strong lean). A cool-toned person stays cool whether they are pale in January or tanned in July.
Why this is the thing that matters
Because undertone does not move, it is the reliable anchor for every shade decision. Match a lipstick, blush or shadow to your undertone and it keeps working across the whole year.
That is why Step 1 of the method is Know Your Tone. Everything after it depends on getting this one thing right, and it is easier than it sounds once you know which cues to read.
